Join HOGLinda is right about the heavy top pressure. That style has been central to the Gracie approach since at least the 1940s, with Helio Gracie focusing on positional control and maintaining a dominant top position to wear opponents down and set up submissions. It’s not just a strategy for older practitioners, though it certainly helps. Carlson Gracie Senior, for example, built much of his competitive success and his team’s reputation on a very physical, pressure-based game that prioritized control over flash. Even Rolls Gracie, known for his innovation, emphasized a strong base and effective top game as foundational. This lineage of heavy, controlling pressure is something you see echoed in many Renzo black belts.
