Jay, I hear you on the sub-only appeal. A lot of the guys at my gym in Austin feel the same way, especially the newer white belts. But I gotta agree with Alex that it really changes the game. I think IBJJF points actually encourage a wider skillset. If you can only attack submissions, you miss out on a ton of positional understanding.
Last week, Coach Mark was drilling spider guard passes for what felt like an hour, and there’s no way you develop that kind of control just by hunting subs. When I roll, I'm trying to work through positions, not just leap to a leg lock. Points make you earn those positions. Nagai is obviously good at both, but I wonder if the sub-only guys would have the same positional mastery.
